Can I get pregnant if I have my period?

There is a misconception that a woman cannot get pregnant while she is menstruating. That is not true. The answer to that question is simple: yes! However, the probability of getting pregnant is very small and happens most often if your cycle is irregular, or extremely short or long. Read on to find out if you can get pregnant shortly before or shortly after your period.

Why can I get pregnant while on my period?

It is possible to get pregnant during any unprotected intercourse. Although unlikely, it is indeed possible to get pregnant while on your period. This usually happens when a woman has a very short cycle and ovulation occurs very close to the start of their period or when their cycle is irregular. In that case, bleeding that is thought to be menstrual - it may not be, and if you have unprotected sex during that period, pregnancy may occur. Can I get pregnant immediately after menstruation?

In addition to the question of can I get pregnant during my period, you may be wondering if it is possible right after my period? Again the answer is possible but unlikely. A woman usually ovulates about 2 weeks after the first day of her menstrual cycle, however if the period lasts 7 or 8 days, then it is only 5 or 6 days until ovulation. Bearing in mind that spermatozoa can survive in the uterus and fallopian tubes for up to 3 days, there is a possibility of getting pregnant.

Can I get pregnant right before my period?

It is very difficult to remain in another state right before menstruation, bearing in mind that ovulation occurred approximately 2 weeks before menstruation. Also, the endometrium, which will bleed with the onset of menstruation, will most likely not accept the fertilized egg cell. However, some women ovulate closer to the start of menstruation, and it happens that several ovulations occur in one cycle. The only reliable way to prevent unwanted pregnancy is to use contraception.
